5th Grade Lego Challenge

3/20/2014

We all know that it is fairly difficult to hold the attention of elementary students on those last few days before Spring Break. Well, Mary Ann Simmons and Aimee Harrison came up with an engaging activity that made boredom impossible in their 5th Grade classrooms.

Jason, one of their 5th graders, had created a stop motion lego video earlier in the year using the Stop Motion app and iMovie and his teachers were so impressed with it they asked him to demo this process for all of the language arts classes. I was in Mary Ann's room for one of the demos and he did an amazing job.

After the demo, students were put into groups of 4 or 5 and each group was given a bag of legos. They were asked to create a scenario with a beginning, middle and end using just the legos in the bag, Stop Motion and iMovie. Further, they were told that the iMovie could have titles and music, but they were not allowed to use voice overs that explained what was happening in their video.

Below are some pictures from the process and an example of a finished product.

Hello, awesome idea that you posted. Do you first take the pictures in the camera roll or do you use Stop motion to take the pictures?
Thanks for your time

I am going to talk about your project at my next animation, in front of about 150 teachers, in the Ipad Sommet 2014 in Montréal next week :)
All credits will be given to you don't worry :)
Thanks for sharing your ideas on the web, more teachers should take example.
Merci beaucoup madama

No worries! I deleted the extras. Thanks for sharing our students' work with your audience! That makes me very proud. I will let the students know!
